| Why selected | Velocity + relevance: 28K CCU on a very high like ratio, and it is the near-exact skeleton of the zombie-survival-with-building game we're prototyping — an RNG acquisition verb bolted onto a tower-defense base. | obs |
Identity & classification
One-liner fantasy
"Gamble for ever-better weapons, fortify your base, and watch your defenses hold the horde off your heart — even while you're offline." The title itself sells the two verbs it fuses: Build a Base (tower defense / construction) and RNG (the pull).
Genre + subgenre
Strategy → Tower Defense, cross-bred with an RNG/gacha collector. Storefront genre reads "Strategy"; the moment-to-moment feel is a roll-collector with a lose condition.
Recombination map
This game is three known loop families stacked:
- Gacha/lucky-block economy — the dice is a reskinned pack-open. Directly echoes Lucky Block Rush (roll → reveal → place → passive income) and the pack-reveal of World Cup Album / Spin a Soccer Card. obs
- Tower-defense auto-battler — placed weapons fight waves on their own; you press "Start Wave". This is the layer none of the DB idle-collectors have. obs
- Place-to-earn / offline base — the base keeps fighting offline, the classic idle-income + offline-earnings brick set seen across the corpus. inf
Lucky Block Rush is the economic spine (RNG pull → place object → it produces value → upgrade/reroll). Spin a Soccer Card / World Cup Album supply the slot-reveal grammar. What's genuinely different: a real fail state. Every collector in the DB is loss-proof — you can only go up. Here a zombie reaching the heart is an actual loss, which converts passive "number-go-up" into defended progress. That single addition is the game's differentiation wedge, and it maps cleanly onto the reskin-the-verb-keep-the-economy principle: borrow the roll→place→earn chassis, reskin the payoff into an active defense.
FTUE — first-time user experience
The screenshots capture the exact forced-tutorial prompt chain, timestamped from the Roblox filenames (session started 15:30:17).
| t (m:ss) | On-screen prompt | What it forces |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | "Roll at least 4 times" | Spawn on your plot (0 coins, empty), directed to the bottom-center dice |
| 0:14 | Roll 1/4 — Cross Bow 1 in 15 | First pull; odds printed on the item; a 2× luck clover is active |
| 0:27 | Roll 2/4 — Wood Block 1 in 3 | Teaches that blocks (walls) drop from the same dice as weapons |
| 0:33 | Roll 3/4 — Wooden Spear Barrel 1 in 4 | Builds a small starter inventory |
| 0:39 | Roll 4/4 — Wooden Trap 1 in 8 → "Close the roller to continue" | Ends the forced-roll gate |
| 0:44 | "Build your base" (0/40) | Enter build mode, Blocks/Weapons tabs, place from the tray |
| 1:06 | "When you're ready, exit the build mode" (1/40) | Places first weapon, then exit |
| 1:27 | "Defend your base!" — Wave 1 | First combat; weapon auto-fires; "??? at wave 20" goal shown |

- Time-to-first-reward ≈ 14s (spawn → first roll reveal) — comfortably inside the corpus's ~40s target. obs
- Forced spine in ~6 taps: roll ×4 → build/place → exit → defend. Everything else (skills, shop, offline, crafting) is withheld until after the first wave. obs
- Rigged-generous first pulls: the tutorial's four rolls run under a 2× luck clover and hand a usable starter kit (crossbow + spear barrel + trap + block) — the controlled-first-drop pattern, so every new player leaves onboarding able to build. obs
- Comeback hook planted early: the run permanently displays "??? at wave 20" — a named boss wall dangled before you can reach it. obs
The 10-second core loop
The ONE core mechanic, stated unambiguously
Roll the dice (single click/tap on the bottom-screen dice) to acquire a randomized defensive weapon, then place it in build mode. There is no ambiguity about physical input: the roll is a click on a fixed UI element; building is click-to-place; combat is automated once "Start Wave" is pressed, with an optional manual sword swing. obs
Why it feels good
Two stacked satisfactions: (1) reveal drama — the not-knowing-what-you-rolled, amplified by rarity-scaled unlock cinematics; and (2) power made visible — the rolled item immediately does work on screen, killing zombies. Unlike a pure collector, the reward is validated in combat, so a good roll feels earned when it holds a wave. obs
Skill expression
Thin but present: what you roll is luck, but where you place weapons across the 40-slot plot, whether you spend rolls on DPS or on wall blocks, when you press "Start Wave," and manual sword cleanup of leakers are all player decisions. Each placed weapon carries its own DPS/Health stat sign, so coverage and lane-packing matter. A skilled player fronts high-DPS barrels and melees the straggler; a new one lets a big zombie reach the heart. obs
The session loop (meta)
- What strings 10-sec loops into 25 min: roll → place → start wave → survive/scale → roll better → rebuild. Waves escalate (more/armored/faster zombies), which forces re-rolling and re-placing to keep up — a natural difficulty ratchet that keeps the roll relevant. obs
- Auto-roll unlock: at some point an auto-roll becomes available (observed running for ~3 continuous minutes with a looping dice animation and a persistent scream SFX at the top). This automates the chore of pulling while the player focuses on building/defending. obs
- How a session ends: either a wave breaches (a big zombie reaches the heart) or the player taps the red "End Waves" button to voluntarily cash out and return to building. Every personal best fires a "New Record! – Wave N" banner, tying the session directly to the leaderboard's Top-Wave axis. obs
- Between-session hook: the base earns offline — the HUD shows "Offline Earnings (Per hour)" of 11.1K–14.9K coins/hr (plus a separate offline-roll track, gated behind the "Roll Offline" skill). That's the concrete return magnet, on top of the skill tree and better pending rolls. obs
- Long-term goal sold: climb the weaponry tech ladder (medieval → upgraded materials → Tesla-tier), complete the roll pool's rarities, and build a base that survives ever-deeper waves. inf
Progression systems
Ladders observed
- Weapon/roll pool (odds-ranked): a single "1 in N" rarity ladder — Wood Block 1/3, Wooden Mortar 1/3, Wooden Spear Barrel 1/4, Wooden Trap 1/8, Cross Bow 1/15, Stone Spear Barrel 1/43 … up to Wooden Tesla 1 in 15K. Material tiers climb wooden → stone within an item family. obs
- Plot ladder: the build plot is a 40-slot budget (seen counting 0/40 → 16/40). More/bigger plots appear as you progress (a second plot was visible). obs
- Wave ladder: escalating waves with stronger zombie archetypes (farmer, viking, iron/armored, cosmetic variants) and differing speeds; enemy HP scales (80 → 350+ observed). A named boss sits at wave 20 ("??? at wave 20"), with the world leaderboard reaching wave 546. obs
- Skill tree: hexagonal node grid — mapped below. obs
- Index: an "Index" button opens a collection/encyclopedia of rollable items — a completion ladder. obs
- Relic/crafting (store copy + a "Crafting Machine" seen in-world): boss-relic crafting toward stronger objects — present but not exercised on capture. inf
Skill tree (hexagonal) — nodes & costs

| Node | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Luck I | Raises roll luck (unlocked) | — |
| Luck II | Further luck | 800 coins |
| Gold Rolls | Coins per roll / gold-tier rolls | 1.1K coins |
| Fast Rolls I | Shorter roll cooldown (cuts the ~2.9s timer) | 15 (dice) |
| Auto Roll | Automates rolling | unobs |
| Roll Offline | Base keeps rolling while offline | 5.0K coins |
| Player section | Player-related upgrades | unobs |
| ~6 locked nodes | Hidden (?) | unobs |
The tree is dual-currency (gold coins + a dice currency) and pointedly roll-centric: every legible node buys more luck, faster rolls, richer rolls, or offline rolls. It is the game's progression spine. obs
Rebirth / prestige
Still no rebirth/cash-reset observed — progression runs through the skill tree + weapon-rarity climb, not a Lucky-Block-Rush-style prestige. Whether one exists past wave 20 remains a gap. unobs
Pace & first hard wall
Early waves fall to a handful of barrels; the signposted wall is the wave-20 "???" boss — the game explicitly counts down to it every run. Beyond that, difficulty is effectively open-ended (leaderboard wave 546). obs
Economy
| Currency | Earn source (observed) | Sinks | Conf. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coins | Drop from every zombie kill; wave clears; offline (11.1K–14.9K/hr); Star Pack (45K) | Skill nodes (Luck II 800, Gold Rolls 1.1K, Roll Offline 5K), building mats | obs |
| Dice | Second currency (dice icon) — earn source unobserved | Skill nodes (Fast Rolls I = 15 dice); offline-roll track | obs |
| Luck | Stat — base 1.5×; +2 group/like reward; 2× clover boosts; potions, packs, Luck I/II nodes | Consumed as the roll-quality (odds) modifier | obs |
| Building mats | Wood/Stone blocks — roll from the dice (Wood Block 1/3) or bought (Star Pack) | Placed as static walls on the plot | obs |
| Robux | Real money → starter pack, potions, gamepasses, Power Rolls | See §11 | obs |
Numbers captured
Coins observed climbing 0 → 60 → 403 → 3.7K within the session; offline earnings 11.1K–14.9K coins/hr; roll cooldown ~2.86–3.15s (cut by Fast Rolls); base luck 1.5×. Skill-node prices: Luck II 800, Gold Rolls 1.1K, Roll Offline 5.0K coins, Fast Rolls I 15 dice. Scaling units run to K/M/B (leaderboard best-rolls hit 1 in 50.0B). obs
Free-vs-paid boundary
Paid never buys exclusive content — it buys luck, speed, and coins. Gamepasses/potions raise luck (better odds), Power Rolls buy a high-luck pull, and coin packs skip the grind. The satisfying verb (the manual roll + place) is never sold away; only its rate and quality are. Textbook monetization-three-channels. obs
Offline / idle earnings
Confirmed and quantified: the HUD's "Offline Earnings (Per hour)" reads 11.1K–14.9K coins/hr, and a parallel offline-roll track sits at 0 until the 5.0K-coin "Roll Offline" node is purchased — a clean example of gate-inputs-not-outputs (offline rolls are gated, offline coins flow). No "welcome back" banner was captured. obs
Randomness & reward systems
Rarity here is odds-denominated, Sol's-RNG style: every pull prints its "1 in N" on screen. No hidden odds table — the number is the rarity.
| Item | Odds | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Block | 1 in 3 | Common wall material |
| Wooden Mortar | 1 in 3 | Common AoE weapon |
| Wooden Spear Barrel | 1 in 4 | Common single-target |
| Wooden Trap | 1 in 8 | Uncommon ground trap |
| Cross Bow | 1 in 15 | Uncommon ranged |
| Stone Spear Barrel | 1 in 43 | Rare (material upgrade) |
| Wooden Tesla | 1 in 15,000 | Chase item — bespoke reveal |
| Leaderboard "Best roll" ceilings observed: 1 in 1.5K · 1 in 30.0M · 1 in 100.0M · 1 in 50.0B | ||

- Odds span 1-in-3 to 1-in-50-billion — an enormous rarity range that fuels an effectively endless chase and the leaderboard's "Best roll" flex. obs
- Luck shifts the curve: a base 1.5× multiplier, stackable 2× clovers, +2 group/like luck, and Luck I/II nodes all bias pulls toward rarer items — the entire skill tree exists to move these odds. obs
- Power Roll: a special "POWER ROLL" pull (purple/gold banner) that surfaces higher-tier items — the paid/boosted variance spike. obs
- The reveal: rarity-scaled staging — commons flash a quick card, rares dim the whole scene for a bespoke cinematic (the Wooden Tesla's asteroid-crash). Escalation-by-rarity is a clear pillar. obs
- First-pull rigging: the tutorial's four forced rolls run under a 2× luck clover — a controlled-generous first-drop. obs
Juice & feedback inventory
Visual

- Per-roll reveal stings inf
Screenshake / particle / slow-mo specifics per action were not itemized on the recording — flag for a juice-focused re-capture pass. unobs
Social & competitive systems
Correction from the screenshots: there is a persistent leaderboard, pinned top-right all session. It ranks players on two axes at once — "Top wave" and "Best roll" (e.g. thousandVolts: wave 546, 1 in 50.0B; froggers: 206, 1 in 100.0M; K_Atoffel: 410, 1 in 600M; habub: 110, 1 in 30.0M). Other players' names, waves, and built-out bases are visible in-world (maxme08 "Wave 88" walking past). obs
- Two competitive ladders: "Best roll" manufactures pure roll-envy (a 1-in-50-billion pull is a flex you can't grind, only gamble into), while "Top wave" rewards defensive skill + investment. obs
- Social proof / aspiration: seeing a neighbor at wave 88 or a 1-in-50B roll reframes the ceiling as reachable — the same walkable-aspiration effect Lucky Block Rush uses. obs
- +2 Luck "Group + Like Reward": a soft social/virality lever — join the group and like the game for permanent luck. obs
Retention machinery
- Offline earnings (quantified): 11.1K–14.9K coins/hr while away, plus an offline-roll track you unlock — the primary return magnet, now confirmed on the HUD. obs
- Skill tree — a long ladder of luck/roll nodes (many still "?") to grind toward. obs
- Discounted starter with a countdown: a "19 STARTER / 93% OFF" offer runs a live timer (seen ticking 8:06 → 11:54) — a recurring FOMO re-engagement beat. obs
- +2 Luck "Group + Like Reward": permanent luck for joining the group/liking — drives both retention and the algorithm's like-ratio. obs
- Leaderboard chase (Top wave + Best roll) and the "??? at wave 20" boss goal give durable long-clock targets. obs
- Dailies / login streaks / codes: not seen on capture (community code sites exist externally, implying codes). unobs
Reading against three-reward-clocks: the instant clock (the roll, ~2.9s), the short clock (waves, 5-min luck boosts, the starter countdown), and a long clock (skill tree + dual leaderboard + wave-20 boss) are all present and rarely bottom out together — a healthier three-clock stack than the first pass suggested. obs
Monetization
| Touchpoint | What it sells | Channel | Price | Conf. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Pack ("19 STARTER") | 2× luck (5 min) + potion + slime cannon + stone blocks + 45K coins; live "93% OFF" countdown (8:06→11:54 observed) | Acceleration + chance + FOMO | 19 R | obs |
| Power Roll | Special high-luck pull surfacing higher-tier items (jackpot-style) | Chance | unobs | obs |
| Potions | Timed luck increases | Acceleration | unobs | obs |
| Gamepasses | Luck / coin / roll boosts | Acceleration | unobs | obs |
- When prompts appear: the starter pack is a persistent in-world float plus a top-right banner with a running discount timer — always present, pressing gently rather than gating a wall. obs
- Pressure curve: soft. Every offer maps to luck (better odds), coins (build faster), or waiting-skip (offline/auto rolls) — acceleration + chance, not content gating. Clean fit to monetization-three-channels. obs
- What the whale buys: stacked luck (gamepass + potions + Power Rolls) to chase the 1-in-millions leaderboard rolls, plus coin packs to fund the skill tree. inf
UX, controls & presentation
- Core HUD: three big bottom-center buttons — Build (hammer) · Roll (dice) · Skills (arrows, with a red "upgrades available" badge). Coins top-left; luck-multiplier + roll-timer bottom-left; offline earnings bottom-right; leaderboard top-right; Shop + Index rails on the left. obs
- Build mode: a dedicated panel with Blocks/Weapons tabs, a per-item count (2×, 1×), a 40-slot plot budget (X/40), and Clear-plot / Exit / Delete controls. obs
- Index: a collection encyclopedia of rollable items (completion tracking). obs
- Readability: strong — the heart-in-a-glass-case is an instantly legible fail objective; "1 in N" and HP bars telegraph value/threat; a bystander can read "roll → build → fight." obs
- Control scheme: PC — click dice to roll, click-to-place in build mode, sword melee, Start Wave / End Waves buttons. Mobile parity not tested. obs
Distribution & meta
- Title/thumbnail promise: "Build a Base RNG" front-loads both hooks (construction + gambling) in the name — high-CTR for players hunting either genre. inf
- Ratios: 99% like ratio, ~25-min avg session, 13M+ visits, global rank #56, momentum "stable." Strong health signals. obs
- External signal: multiple third-party wikis, code sites, and a planner site exist (buildabaserng.com, build-a-base-rng.wiki, bloxodes stats) — evidence of an active community. TikTok/YouTube/Discord size not quantified. inf
Craft & cost estimate
Looks expensive
- Per-item bespoke unlock cinematics (asteroid→Tesla) — content that scales with the roll pool
- Distinct modeled/animated zombie archetypes with speed + cosmetic variants
- Tower-defense combat sim (pathing, DPS, wave scaling) on top of an economy
Looks cheap / templated
- Classical music = free/licensed public-domain audio
- Medieval weapon set reuses one art language with material swaps (wooden→stone)
- Auto-roll = one looping animation + a counter
- Hexagonal skill tree = a data-driven node grid
Could our team build it? Yes — the chassis (roll→place→earn) is one we already understand from the DB. The new engineering is the tower-defense layer (pathing + wave director + auto-combat) and the per-rarity reveal cinematics. Rough estimate: ~8–12 dev-weeks for a vertical slice (roll engine + build/place + one wave director + 6–8 weapons + 4 zombie types + 3 reveal tiers), before liveops content. inf
The "why it works" thesis
An argument, not a summary.
1. The fail state is the innovation. Every RNG-collector in the corpus is loss-proof, so a bad roll costs nothing and a good roll means little. Build a Base RNG makes rolls matter by putting them to the test against a horde that can actually kill your heart. The dice stops being a slot machine and becomes a supply line for a defense you can lose — which is what gives the pull genuine stakes and explains the 25-minute sessions.
2. It reskins a validated economy instead of inventing one. Exactly the reskin-the-verb-keep-the-economy move: the roll→place→earn chassis is proven (Lucky Block Rush, the idle-collectors); the studio spent its novelty budget on the verb wrapper (defend) and the reveal spectacle (per-item cinematics), the two things that can't be cheaply cloned.
3. The dopamine architecture runs multiple clocks that rarely all stop. The instant roll, the escalating wave, the 5-minute luck booster, the always-climbing skill tree, and the offline base each tick on a different horizon. Something is nearly always pending, and — crucially — the reveal is invested in, not left flat, so the peak moment of the loop actually peaks.
What's genuinely novel vs. genre fare: the marriage of pure-RNG acquisition with a tower-defense lose condition and an offline auto-battler. Collectors have the roll; TD games have the defense; almost nobody welds the gacha pull directly to the tower it feeds.
Steal list & anti-patterns
Adopt
- Fail state on a collector loop — a defendable objective that makes rolls matter.
- Per-rarity reveal cinematics (asteroid→Tesla) as the differentiation spend.
- Custom dice/pointer signature UI — cheap identity.
- "Luck roll" double-pull as a built-in variance spike.
- Auto-roll that automates the chore, keeping the placement/defense verb manual.
- Classical-music premium veneer — free asset, upmarket feel.
Adapt
- Hexagonal skill tree — good long-clock, but verify node legibility on mobile.
- Star-pack 2×-luck-5-min booster — pair it to a real friction spike, not just the store.
- Offline base defense — needs a visible "welcome back" banner to convert returns (unobserved here).
Avoid
- Endless "scream" auto-roll SFX — 3 min of a looping scream is fatigue, not juice.
- No social/co-play layer — breaks the corpus's forming law; don't ship without one.
- Opaque odds — no visible odds screen risks trust; publish a rate table.
Recombination ideas this teardown suggests
- Build a Base RNG × Grow a Garden — gate roll inputs (dice stock / restock timers) instead of starving output, to pace without a "feels poor" moment. → feed to Stage 0.
- Build a Base RNG × Spin a Soccer Card — add a pay-to-steal / raid-a-neighbor's-base layer to satisfy the one-player-affects-another law the current game lacks.
- Build a Base RNG × Lucky Block Rush — layer a visible rebirth that resets coins for a permanent luck/DPS multiplier, taught early and shown on the base.
Rebuild spec — prototype handoff
Concrete enough that a builder who never saw the game can prototype it.
- View / perspective: third-person over your own base plot; UI dice fixed at bottom-center.
- Core mechanic: click the dice → RNG returns a weapon of tier T (weighted table). Enter build mode → click a ground cell to place the weapon. Click "Start Wave."
- Player object & movement: a walkable avatar with a melee sword (click to swing) for cleaning up leaked enemies.
- Entities + spawn rules: zombies spawn at map edges each wave and path toward the central "heart" (a destructible objective in a glass case). Archetypes = {basic, farmer, viking, iron} scaling count/HP/armor/speed by wave N. Placed weapons auto-target nearest in range.
- Loop (every ~10s): roll → reveal (rarity-scaled anim) → place → weapon auto-fires at wave → survive → repeat/roll better. Wave lost if the heart's HP hits 0.
- Progression for the prototype: 3–5 weapon tiers with placeholder prices (real numbers unobserved — start with e.g. Tier1 free → T2 250 → T3 1K → T4 5K → T5 25K coins) + a small luck-node tree. Tune later from a re-capture.
- Win/fail/restart: fail = heart destroyed → restart wave; no hard "win," it's endless-scaling survival.
- Minimal juice: reveal sting + rarity cinematic for top tier; hit numbers on zombies; heart-damage screen flash.
- Controls mapping: LMB = roll / place / swing; B = build toggle; button = Start Wave.
Gap list — drives re-capture
The 16 screenshots closed most of the first pass's gaps (odds, FTUE, offline, skill tree, leaderboard — now obs). What remains:
- re-captureFull roll pool + odds. ~a dozen items are captured (1/3 → 1/15K); enumerate the rest up the ladder toward the 1-in-billions tail, and do a ~100-roll tally to check displayed vs. actual rates.
- re-captureRemaining prices. Have: skill nodes (800 / 1.1K / 5K coins, 15 dice), Starter 19 R. Still need: potion / gamepass / Power-Roll Robux prices and the full skill-node grid (6 locked hexes).
- re-captureDice currency — where it's earned (kills? waves? offline?) and its full sink list.
- re-captureRebirth/prestige? Confirm whether a reset-for-multiplier exists past wave 20 / the locked skill nodes.
- re-captureRelic / boss crafting — the "Crafting Machine" seen in-world; exercise it and the wave-20 "???" boss.
- re-captureAuto Roll node cost and how Power Roll is priced/triggered.
- watchDirect player-affects-player — leaderboard + visible bases confirmed, but is there any steal/trade/raid/co-op? (Corpus law says a hit usually has one.)
- watchRetention long-clock extras — dailies, codes, events, update cadence.
- watchMobile parity — three-button HUD + hex skill tree on touch.
- unknowableFirst-pull rigging beyond the 2× tutorial luck — needs many fresh accounts to prove weighting.
- unknowableWhale spend — what top spenders actually buy.

Thesis to test (§15): if the fail-state-on-a-collector really is the retention driver, CCU should hold on "stable" momentum absent a content drought. If it decays fast, the missing social layer (§9) was the load-bearing gap — post-mortem and feed the lessons file. inf
